Written in the 16th. century this song tells the story of the four ladies in waiting to Mary of Guise, Queen-Consort of King James 5th.of Scotland and mother of Mary, Queen of Scots. “Yestreen the Queen had four Marys, tonight she’ll have but three”. Legend has it that one of the Marys became pregnant by the King, and Mary of Guise, fearful that the issue might be male and be legitimised by the King thus denying her daughter’s position as rightful heir, had the “Mary” in question beheaded. Scored by Iain Sutherland for Soprano and chamber orchestra.
